About the event

Born in Arkansas on March 11th, 1942, and raised in Tulsa, artist, poet, author, and theater set designer Joe Brainard moved to New York City at age 19. There, he joined the community of New York School poets and painters who would later become his artistic collaborators, including fellow Tulsans Dick Gallup and Ron Padgett. From 1959-1960, Brainard, Padgett, and Dick Gallup (high school students at the time) published The White Dove Review, a contemporary poetry magazine that printed works by world-renowned poets such as Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg.

Join us for a celebration of Tulsa's literary legacy and Brainard's life with poetry readings, a poetry exhibit of Brainard's work, and a discussion on why his work still matters, hosted by Portlyn Houghton-Harjo.
